UpSideOut project

What is UpSideOut?UpSideOut logo

UpSideOut is a 6 week group work, rolling program delivered by West Sussex Youth Support & Development Services every half term. Young people who request a place on the program should expect to be part of a small group of about 8 others. They will be offered lots of opportunity for fun and socialising and a fun activity of their choice if they attend all sessions. The approach is one where young people will learn experientially and none of the delivery is “chalk and talk.” The project is ever evolving so young people will also be expected to contribute to evaluation and development. An evening meal and where necessary transport will be provided. Courses are currently running in Crawley, Chichester & Littlehampton and the sessions are held weekly in local youth centres.

Advice and Information

Advice and information

Programme aims:

We aim to bring out the best in young people. We work with them in a fun and supportive way. We raise their awareness of the consequences of their behaviour and explore the reasons that they may choose to behave in certain ways. We take young people on a journey that empowers them to make more informed and positive choices. We intend to reduce the numbers of young people entering the criminal justice system. We also endeavour, through the partnership, to link them in with other services that can support them during and after the programme.

Who is suitable? (criteria & process)

This is a targeted program and the main route through which young people will be referred is from the Prevention Team within the Youth Offending Service. We can however extend a number of places to external referrers. Young people need to be:

  • Able to work in a group work setting and have some fun.
  • Be ready to change their behaviour.
  • Be between 13 and 16.
  • Have evidenced risks of (re) offending, “getting into trouble.”

The programme is flexibly designed to meet the varied needs and circumstances that have caused offending behaviour. Request forms need to be completed to allow the facilitators to account for those needs and to score a level of risk of offending for individuals, so that their risk reduction can be measured on completion. We encourage use of the electronic form and we trust that professionals requesting a place will fully explain the programme and secure consent prior to submitting the form. The form can be downloaded from the related documents on the right hand side of this page, including the laerning journey you will take once you are referred.
