Climate Week 2012 is coming soon!
Find out more about the week and 'The
Challenge'.
We all have an impact on the environment
through our use of resources and burning fossil fuels for everyday
activities such as driving cars and heating our homes. There are
lots of easy things we can do in our daily lives to make
environmentally sustainable choices – see how many you can do! And
tell your friends and family too.
Together we can make a real difference.
Think about how your home is heated -
insulate your home, turn down your central heating by one degree.
Will you be warmer putting on a jumper or grabbing a blanket? Use
energy efficient appliances and lighting - open the curtains
- natural light is free.
- Save water in the home – have showers rather
than baths, turn the tap off when cleaning your teeth.
- Car share or ride your bike for short
journeys. Walk, cycle, or organise a lift-share to school, or a
friend's house.
- Eat local, seasonal, fresh, unprocessed food.
Think about the packaging you use. For your packed lunch,
open larger packs and take what you need for the day. Recycle as
much packaging as you can. When you’re preparing your food, avoid
leaving fridge doors open. Only use as much water as you need when
cooking or making a hot drink. Organic matter e.g. potato peelings,
left over food, tea leaves etc. can be transferred straight to a
compost heap in the garden and used as a natural fertiliser for
plants.
- If you have a garden at home, you could
transform it into a mini nature reserve for wildlife. The same
could be done in your school grounds.
- Reduce the amount of waste you produce and
re-use or recycle as much as you can. Try to buy second hand items
where you can. Whenever you buy something, go for the most
eco-friendly option. Take your old clothes to charity shops.
