Staying Safe

The chances of being a victim of violent crime in West Sussex are low. However you can make yourself less likely to be a victim if you take a few sensible precautions:
  • plan how you’re going to get home in advance;
  • pre-book a taxi and only used licensed taxis. Click here for ways to check that a taxi is licensed and more taxi safety tips;
  • check what time your bus or train stops running and have an alternative travel plan just in case;
  • stick to well-lit and busy areas if you must walk home;
  • act confidently - look like you know where you are going;
  • carry your valuables discreetly;
  • know your limits. You are very vulnerable if you are drunk;
  • pace your drinking and alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcohol ones;
  • stay together with friends and look after each other, and;
  • don't go off with someone you’ve just met. If you must, let someone know where you are going.
